Philip Bell is the President of the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA). The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) is the North American voice of the electric arc furnace (EAF) steel industry. We are 21st Century Steelmakers who lead in innovation and growth. SMA members are dedicated to safely and sustainably producing steel in ways that allow customers to build their businesses, employees to build their lives and communities to build their futures.
The American steel industry isn’t what you’d think. And for good reason. For over a quarter century, electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking has made steel greener, safer and the most energy efficient in the world today. Over 70% of all steel made in America is sustainably produced using electric arc furnaces. EAF steel is the backbone of our country. And the strength of American EAF steel is continuously cast by the members of SMA – the Steel Manufacturers Association.
We are the Steel Manufacturers Association—the largest steel association in America. We represent the electric arc furnace (EAF) steel industry, which accounts for 70% of domestic steel made today. We are stewards for safety and sustainability. We are pioneers for innovation and change. And day-to-day, we are the advocates behind public policy solutions and member services that enable steelmakers to build their businesses, employees to build their lives and communities to build their futures.
Vastly more energy efficient than traditional steelmaking, EAF steel is made using electrical currents to melt scrap steel and other recycled metals. Beyond the improved environmental impacts, EAF steel can be produced at higher efficiency and with more flexibility than blast furnace steel.
